要旨 Abstract:Some models predict expansion of oceanic oxygen minima
with future global warming. Seasonal or interannual dead zones
have been discovered recently off Chile and Oregon, although it is
unclear whether these are unique new phenomena or a recent
manifestation of natural variations. Paleoceanographic records
reveal episodes of hypoxia around the Pacific Rim, offer insight
into mechanisms and natural variations of changing oxygen
concentration in the oceans related to watermass ventilation and
biological productivity, and provide useful targets for testing and
improving models that include biogeochemical processes.
